July 2024 Flying Needle News

Berries burst forth as

Cicadas and katydids

Chorus Summer's song

Hello Friends of Flying Needle!

Happy Lesser Heat!

- fifth summer solar node -

Hope this finds you well during these interesting times!

Seasonal Musings & Reflections

Here in the North Carolina Piedmont we are enjoying a bit of respite from the heat. Cool mornings and evenings have been a recent delight. Birdsong is sparse. The annual chorus of cicadas and katydids has begun. Hydrangeas brightly bloom even during this dry spell. Black and blueberries, melons, plums and peaches abound. Their juicy sweetness minds me of how yin is gathering within during this intensely yang time. Constant transformation fractally expressing through and as the dance of the seasons, the more than human world's exuberance reminds me to appreciate the joyful mystery of life. Dynamically holding the transformations of our times can be incredibly challenging. I am grateful for opportunities to remember to connect to the continuity of temporal cycles that are ancestral to the human project. They give me perspective.

What are the practices and inquiries that give you perspective?

Learning is one of my most beloved ways to gain perspective. Last month I had the opportunity to learn with my brilliant friend and colleague Josh Margolis. Josh is an acupuncturist and Canadian trained osteopath practicing in Santa Rosa, California. He taught a powerful three day dive into Segmental Acupuncture. It was a total joy to go deeper into one of my favorite clinical approaches to treating chronic pain. We looked at the interplay of embryology, the central and peripheral nervous system, clinical applications of our most current understanding of pain, manual techniques, and how all this relates to practice of Chinese medicine in the clinic. It was an awesome class. I am looking forward to continuing to study with Josh in the coming year.

Mada and I are enjoying the spaciousness between the end of middle school and the beginning of high school.

Hope wherever you are, you have the opportunity to enjoy some Summer spaciousness as well!

May your Summer days be filled with beauty, mystery, and friendship!

May you and your kin feel both rooted and free!

May we walk in gratitude with our Ancestors!

May all being and becoming receive nourishment!

Yin gathers within

Yang teems without - Summer's

Dynamic koan.

It is my sincere hope that you have found something of use in these words.

If you know folks who you feel would enjoy this newsletter, please forward it their way! Thank you!

Wishing you and all your relations wellbeing and good medicine!

With gratitude,

Taran
